About the Author
Gareth de la Torre is the author of What the Ruck Just Happened, a candid and uplifting memoir that traces his journey from life-changing injury to purposeful resilience. In 2018, a sudden accident at home resulted in a traumatic head injury that triggered seizures, memory loss, and recurring blackouts. The diagnosis of Epilepsy that followed reshaped every part of his life, from his career to his independence, but also sparked a deep commitment to rebuilding himself stronger than before.
Determined to transform adversity into action, Gareth began taking on some of the UK’s toughest endurance challenges to raise awareness and funds for the Epilepsy Society and the Royal Marines Association. His mission quickly became about more than physical endurance; it became a way to show others facing hidden battles that vulnerability and strength can coexist.
Gareth has completed a series of high-intensity events including Fan Dance Trinity, three brutal iterations of the famous Special Forces selection route over Pen y Fan and Paras’ 10 twice, the 10-mile loaded march inspired by the Parachute Regiment’s test week. He has also taken on the London Marathon twice wearing full military kit, including boots and a 40lb pack. Through every challenge, Gareth champions one message: We are not defined by our disabilities, but how we rise above them.
